CJPP Guide: Honours Major

The following information reflects changes in the Criminal Justice and Public Policy program effective September 2023. Always consult your Undergraduate Calendar for the year that you were accepted to the CJPP program for complete program details. 

CJPP CO-OP (CJPP:C) students have a different academic and co-op work term schedule, as well as additional CO-OP requirements beyond what is listed in this guide. Please review the CJPP Guide: Honours CO-OP Major for details. 

It is expected that students register for 2.50 credits each semester. Therefore, students will need to register for more courses than those shown below.

Please note that not all courses are offered each semester. Find tentatively scheduled courses for the current and upcoming semesters on our Planned CJPP Courses page. You may also consult with the relevant department for a list of the courses offered in a given semester.

For students following the 2020-2021 undergraduate calendar or later

Foundation Courses

  • POLS*2300 Canadian Government and Politics
  • POLS*2350 Law from a Political Science Perspective
  • SOAN*2120 Introductory Methods
  • SOC*1500 Crime and Criminal Justice
  • SOC*2700 Criminological Theory
  • One of:
    • POLS*2230 Public Policy
    • POLS*2250 Public Administration and Governance

All students are strongly encouraged to complete the foundation courses in their first 10.00 credits of study.

First Year

Required Courses:

  • PHIL*1010 Introductory Philosophy: Social and Political Issues
  • SOC*1500 Crime and Criminal Justice

 

Options:

During the winter semester, students can consider taking any second year courses for which they have completed the prerequisite(s).

 

BA Distribution Requirements:

Students should consult their Undergraduate Calendar for BA Distribution Requirements. BA students are required to have a minimum of 1.5 credits in the humanities, 1.5 credits in the social sciences and 1.0 credits in the natural/mathematical sciences. BA distribution requirements are discussed and reviewed by the BA Program Counsellors. 

 

Continuation Requirement - for students following the 2023-2024 undergraduate calendar or later:

Students with an overall GPA less than 70% after their first year of study (or 5.00 credits) will be invited to meet with a CJPP Faculty Advisor for academic counselling.

Second Year

Required Courses:

  • SOAN*2120 Introductory Methods
  • SOC*2700 Criminological Theory
  • POLS*2350 Law from a Political Science Perspective
  • POLS*2300 Canadian Government
  • One of:
    • POLS*2230 Public Policy
    • POLS*2250 Public Administration and Governance

 

Options:

  • Students can consider taking courses listed for third year, provided they have completed the prerequisites
  • Students should also complete any remaining BA Distribution Requirements, as these are normally completed by the end of the third semester

 

Continuation Requirement - for students following the 2023-2024 undergraduate calendar or later:

  • Students with a minimum overall average of 70% in the six foundation courses will be guaranteed continuation in the CJPP major
  • Students with an overall average below 70% in the six foundation courses will be transferred to the BA (General) program
  • Students may subsequently transfer to another BA (General) Area of Concentration or BA (Honours) program. Students are advised to meet with the BA Counselling Office for further support on transfer within the BA program

Third Year

We strongly suggest that students review the prerequisites of the 4th year courses when selecting 3rd year courses. Students will not be eligible to register for the 4th year courses that they do not have the prerequisities for.

Two of the following restricted electives (1.00 credits):

  • POLS*3210 The Canadian Constitution and Canadian Federalism
  • POLS*3250 Public Policy: Challenges and Prospects

Three of the following restricted electives (1.50 credits):

  • SOC*2760 Homicide
  • SOC*3490 Law and Society
